The Big Lunch is a simple idea from the Eden Project which aims to encourage as many people in the UK as possible to have lunch with their neighbours once a year, for a few hours of friendship, fun and of course, a bit of food!
In 2012, it is also celebrating The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee on Sunday 3rd June and will be called The Big Jubilee Lunch. 60 years on the throne is a huge occasion which we probably won’t experience again in our lifetimes.
A Big Jubilee Lunch can be anything from a few neighbours getting together in the garden or on the street, to a full blown party with food, music and bunting that quite literally stops the traffic.
It isn’t hard to organise a Big Jubilee Lunch and it can be lots of fun. Young people are great networkers brimming with creative ideas to make an amazing celebration and the benefits are huge.
Not only will your community see the difference straight away, with more people getting to know each other creating a friendlier, safer and happier place to live, The Big Lunch is also a fantastic opportunity to develop your own skills, increase confidence and add something special to that all important CV. Anything from growing food for the table, right through to creating the decoration, entertainment and inviting people – there’s a role for everyone.
