One Year On: #ReverseRiots Makes a Stand
You have probably heard us talking a lot about #ReverseRiots, Do Something’s first campaign, for the past few weeks, and now we hope you can see why…
We have been asking you to upload your photos to the Do Something website to have YOUR voice heard, counteract the negative perceptions of UK youth and ultimately shift these stereotypes and help us to make a huge difference to young people in the UK
To really make a stand, and share these amazing positive messages with the world, we have used over 4000 #ReverseRiots pictures uploaded to the gallery throughout the campaign so far to completely cover the House of Reeves building, the burning image of which became an enduring symbol of last year’s coverage of the riots.
Listen to local resident’s reaction to the transformed House of Reeves….
The aim of our stunt today is demonstrate the positives that young people bring to society in the UK and dispel the myths that they all behave badly or have nothing to offer to society.
Our research showed that the reputation of young people was tarnished last summer by what happened in the riots and we want to make sure that conversations stay positive this summer when we know people will be reflecting on the riots.
We hope the scale of the statement we’re making will generate mass awareness that will go some way to countering negative perceptions of UK youth.
We also offered you the chance to take over the profile pictures of some of our top celebrity supporters. Well, on which other day than today would we be doing that?! Watch out on Twitter today to see young people’s #ReverseRiots photos taking over the following Celeb’s profiles!
• Stooshe (@Stooshe)
• Plan B (@4PlanB)
• Delilah (@delilahmusic)
• Roots Manuva (@rootsmanuva)
• The Wombats (@thewombats)
• Sam Faires (@SamanthaFaiers)
• Billie Faiers (@BillieFaiers)
• Paloma Faith (@Palomafaith)
• Toddla T (@TODDLAT)
• Tempa T (@TEMPA_T)
Remember, it’s not too late to get involved! You can still share you message with the world by uploading your #ReverseRiots picture to the website.
You will also be part of this year’s biggest social action movement for young people. The world’s media is looking at the gallery – we want you to be a part of it.
We know we can make a big change and once and for all say enough is enough to the demonization of young people.
Plus, we are still giving out Smart Phones, one per week, until the end of August for the person who gets the most friends to upload their picture!
